Simon Smith
Remora Founder and CEO
An engineer by trade and avid sailor by hobby, Simon invented the Remora SOLO in 2013. Born of British ex-pats, he has been immersed in the rich history of seafaring from an early age. As a child, Simon helped his father and uncle build boats, listening to their stories of sailing and of World War II. Accounts of German U-boats during that war led to Simon’s fascination with submarines. After moving to California’s Central Coast from the Los Angeles area, Simon co-founded a company committed to the design and manufacture of radio-controlled model submarines. In 1989, the company won a Special Visual Effects Emmy Award from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences for it’s fully functional, 26-foot replica of the USS Bowfin for the TV series “War and Remembrance.”Not satisfied unless he is building something, Simon bought a 40-foot sailboat and spent two years restoring her from bow to stern. Realizing that hull cleaning had not advanced beyond hand scrubbing, Simon thought it should be easier – and perhaps even fun. From this basic premise, the Remora SOLO was born.
